Maundy Thursday Meal in the Upper Room

Maundy Thursday Meal in the Upper Room

March 28, 5:30 pm in-person and Zoom on Juneau Live! Studio

Event
Please join us in person or online for the Maundy Thursday service at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Juneau. We observe the Meal in the Upper Room at 5:30 PM, Thursday, March 28. (≈ 2 hours)

What We Do
The Maundy Thursday service begins in the Sanctuary with a solemn tone. We recall Christ having arrived in Jerusalem and calling his disciples together for Passover.

We then come together at a candlelit table, with themed music and a light meal. The participants take turns reading biblical passages that recall Christ’s ministry and teaching. Through Scripture, we walk with Him in his final earthly days including Gethsemane, his arrest, trial and crucifixion. This meal is a commemoration of the Last Supper (final meal) that Jesus had with his apostles. From this came the sacrament of communion (Eucharist) in the Christian Church.

At the closing of the meal, we will give bread to each other, reciting the words of our Savior, “Take and eat, this is my body, do this for the remembrance of me”. Similarly with the wine, “Take and drink, this is my blood, do this for the remembrance of me.” (Matthew26:26) You may take the elements at home simultaneously with us or with your household.

At Home
If you are unable to join us in person, you may want to share a similar meal representative of Jesus’s last Passover with his apostles in your own home. We encourage you to have some wine or wine substitute, and bread of any kind, to take and share at the time when we recite the Words of Institution that Christ gave us.

Foods
The foods listed below are commonly included at our Meal in the Upper Room observance as light meal finger foods, some with Mediterranean origin. Matzo or other unleavened bread, pita or plain cracker

Stripping of the Altar
The service ends with preparation for Good Friday, by stripping the altar, then remaining silent until we depart.

Please join us. This is a very meaningful activity that you won’t soon forget
