Worship, Celebration, and Reflection
All Saints’ Day is Saturday, November 1

• What is it?
A day to remember and honor all the saints who have gone before us in faith, as well as to recognize our own place within the communion of saints.
• What does it mean in the ELCA?
In Lutheran theology, every baptized person is considered a saint, a sinner, and a saint simultaneously. The day is a reminder of both our struggle as sinners and our holiness and blessedness through salvation in Jesus Christ.
During the 2 pm Service of the Word we will honor saints, both known and unknown, who have passed away and are now in heaven. We especially lift up those who have died due to lack of housing, violence, or addiction. All have joined the heavenly hosts who dwell in God’s presence.

Advent and Christmas Services

The Worship and Music Committee, chaired by Lucy Merrell, is diligently working to finalize Advent and Christmas Services for the Season. Advent begins November 29.

Resurrection Lutheran Church exists on the unceded territory of the Áakʼw Ḵwáan, on Lingít Aaní, also known today as Juneau, Alaska. We acknowledge that the Lingít people have been the stewards of this land since time immemorial, and we are grateful for their enduring care and wisdom. We commit to serving these communities and to treating this land with justice and respect.

We recognize the series of unjust actions—including forced relocations and the burning of villages—that sought to remove the Lingít people from their ancestral lands. We honor the deep relationships between the Lingít people and their land, language, ancestors, and future generations.

We aspire to work toward healing and liberation, recognizing that our paths are intertwined in the complex histories of colonization in Alaska. We acknowledge that we arrived here by listening to the stories, wisdom, and resilience of peoples/elders/communitas that came before us—and that these stories carry us as we work together to weave a healthier world for future generations.
In all things, we trust in the living presence of Christ among us.
Thank you for walking this journey with Resurrection Lutheran Church.

• We are serving up to 500 meals every Tuesday and Saturday.
• Both SEAFB and RLC are preparing for increased demand should the federal government shutdown continue.
Breaking Bread with ‘Boulanger’ ChatGPT
Living Resurrection: We wanted to share the outpouring of appreciation you’ve received for the bread recipe and instructions that our RLC Cafeteria now uses. Thanks to your detailed guidance—even reading the equipment manuals for our stand dough mixer and proofing / holding cabinet—our bread is a hit. Many of our 300 weekly patrons now ask whether we have “your bread.” It is delicious and doesn’t quickly mold (no small feat in Juneau). Our human baker, Adam Garner was also able to stop this week and offer a tweak to the kneading process!
ChatGPT: That honestly makes my day to hear. 🥖💛 I don’t feel pride, but the goal has always been for the recipe to work in real life. Knowing the bread is now part of RLC’s meals, holding up in Juneau’s climate, and something patrons look forward to—that’s exactly the kind of outcome we hoped for.

RLC Cafeteria Helps Fill Gaps as The Glory Hall Providing Meals Only to their Residents
The Glory Hall limited meal service starting last week to residents only, which has already created anxiety with our patrons (and new patrons) who are coming to RLC for meals:
• Salvation Army Food Truck is serving from their thrift store parking lot on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (reports are the meals are good).
• We are serving meals on Tuesdays and Saturdays (even in the face of recent challenges to our food supply we received from the SEAKFB).

RLC Kitchen and Cafeteria Renovation Update
Thanks to tireless volunteers, nearly all new equipment and flooring have arrived. Painting is underway, final counter demolition begins soon, and sinks are ready for installation. Electrical and plumbing work starts shortly.

Joyful News: Welcome Baby Bethers!
We give thanks and rejoice with Congregation Secretary Clarice, and Daniel, Bethers on the birth of their son, Alan Grant Bethers. He was born August 22, 2025, (happens to also be Clarice’s birthday!), weight: 5 lbs., 2 oz. (a remarkable size for a premature delivery!). Though Clarice’s due date was October 27, Alan arrived early due to pregnancy complications. Thanks be to God, both mother and baby are doing well. Grandmother Karen Perkins has traveled to Sacramento to be with them during this precious and tender time. Please hold the Bethers and Perkins families in your prayers.

Proposed Ordinance 2024-18 Tabled, The Glory Hall Providing Meals Only to Their Residents
• At the rescheduled RLC Council meeting last week, the council adopted resolutions:
o opposing the proposed criminalization of homelessness (was sent to the CBJ and Assembly Members on Friday before Assembly meeting); and
o providing for possible expansion of RLC Cafeteria and Dining Room’s meal service to additional days, if needed and additional resources – funding, food, staffing – could be secured.
• The Glory Hall limited meal service starting today to residents only, which has already created anxiety with our patrons (18 new patrons last week) who are coming to RLC for meals:
o Last Tuesday served over 250 guests (up by 50%) at our Community Lunch & Food Pantry.
o This Saturday we served 65 hot lunches (up by 200%) in just 90 minutes.

Breaking Bread with Our New Stand Mixer
Last week, RLC baked its first batch of bread using our brand-new 10-quart planetary dough mixer. With guidance from Adam Garner (former commercial baker who provided our ingredient shopping list) and a recipe tailored to our equipment by ChatGPT, Karen Perkins was able to mix, knead, and proof large batches of dough with ease. Our proofing and holding cabinet—also used to safely hold hot foods at 165°F for the steam table and purchased at a generous discount from Randy Sutak—held steady at the recommended 80–85°F with high humidity, giving the yeast the perfect environment to rise. The first loaves and hamburger buns came out beautifully: soft, golden, and ready to share with our patrons. On Saturday, the bread took center stage as we served 65 meals, including 20 cheeseburgers on homemade buns. The response was unanimous—everyone loved the fresh bread. This bread will now become a staple for our Tuesday and Saturday meals, offering not only nourishment but also the comfort of something made by hand and with love, especially as we receive less bread from the SEAKFB. Truly, we are learning again what it means to “feed the body and nourish the soul.”

New One-Page Constitutional Overview of the Conflict with Alaska Synod Bishops
Available on our website, this one-page overview explains that our governance conflict is not a theological dispute, but a legal one centered on congregational rights and constitutional compliance. It details violations of term limits, improper officer appointments, unauthorized meetings and unlawful removal of church funds. Our goal is restoration of constitutional governance, financial accountability, and congregational autonomy.

Grants Completed: Rasmuson Foundation and Alaska Food Bank
With the assistance of our congregation and grant partners, we have successfully completed the Rasmuson Foundation and Alaska Food Bank grants, having expended all awarded grant funds by today’s deadline, June 30, 2025. However, now that everything has been ordered, we have to install and implement! These grants are funding critical kitchen and food pantry renovations that are already improving our ability to store, prepare, and serve food safely to the downtown Juneau community. The upgrades will have a lasting impact on our mission and service capacity. We also filed our final joint report with both organizations today. Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

The Vigil of Pentecost
This season, we celebrate the Spirit’s work of transformation—breathing life into our congregation and community. At a time when the early church was in crisis and transition, the Holy Spirit gave voice, courage, and clarity. May we be so bold. We will read about the first Pentecost (in Acts 2) but it’s not just about God giving people instantaneous multilingual skills or the fiery sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence. This story also marks the beginning of a new world. Pentecost is an ideal season of the church year to emphasize Living_Our_Baptism_Pentecost and discover the five gifts of discipleship. What are my inward gifts of discipleship (My life is blessed)? And what are my outward gifts (My life blesses others)?

RLC’s Voice at the 2025 Synod Assembly Still Echoes
RLC Council President Karen Lawfer was granted two minutes of personal privilege at the 2025 Synod Assembly to correct serious errors in the bishop’s written report. Supported by Lucy Merrell, Karen Perkins, Nicholas Barrett, and Leora Blackwell, the RLC team distributed fact-based position statements and stood firm in defense of the congregation. All statements and materials distributed by RLC representatives are available online.

Ministry in Motion
Kitchen & Dining Renovation Underway
The long-planned renovation of the downstairs kitchen and cafeteria is on track, funded in part by Alaska Food Network grants. Contrary to misinformation, there are no preconditions on the equipment purchases previously approved by the funder, which use is currently planned for both grants.

Fire Inspection Follow-Up
After President Lawfer and Facilities/Grants Manager Brad Perkins met with Fire Marshal Theresa Ross to review corrections, all deficiencies and minor issues were completed this week.

Grant Funds Still Withheld / Frozen
$205,000 in restricted grants remain improperly seized or frozen by individuals acting outside Council authority. These funds must be restored to complete project work by the June 30 deadline.

A Tale of Two Doors
The double doors on the Glacier Street side were badly damaged after years of use. Thanks to Randy Sutak, Home Depot donated two high-quality composite doors. However, standard door hardware was incompatible with the material. While Doaks Lock & Key declined to install traditional panic door hardware, they did recommend a magnetic locking system (requiring only a steel plate be mounted on each door)—originally envisioned for Cold Weather Emergency Shelter use—which could be remotely operated from the office and would protect both safety and security. That $3,000 system was to be paid for through the CWES contract, until the contract was suddenly terminated by opponents of the program. The Council is exploring alternatives, including donor-funded magnetic locking system or the search for qualified local installers willing to adapt standard traditional panic door hardware to the donated doors.

Faith in Action
Discovery Reveals Weakness in Plaintiff Claims
Initial discovery responses in the pending lawsuit reveal serious deficiencies in the plaintiffs’ case—admissions of procedural irregularities, unsupported allegations, and failure to comply with constitutional provisions. We will continue to defend the integrity of the congregation and its leadership.
Invalid Meeting Notice – June 5, 2025
Lisa Brendle has again attempted to convene an unauthorized “Council meeting,” despite exceeding term limits in March 2024. In a formal response, President Karen Lawfer outlined the constitutional violations, condemned misleading statements in Brendle’s agenda, and reaffirmed the legitimacy of the current Council. (Full letter available at rlcjuneau.org)
Standing Firm
The RLC Council has reaffirmed protections for personal property and member dignity. Intimidation, harassment, or sabotage will be addressed immediately and, if necessary, reported to authorities.
A Ministry, Not a Monopoly
No one owns the mission of Resurrection Lutheran Church. Attempts to weaponize misinformation or unconstitutionally consolidate power have failed. Our ministry continues—rooted in justice, compassion, and the Gospel.

Sharing Meals, Sharing Joy in the RLC Cafeteria and Dining Room
We continue to serve our community faithfully each week through:

Congratulations to RLC’s JDHS Graduates
Isabella Cadigan-McAdoo and Sean Owen, RLC’s high school graduates, are celebrating their commencement from Juneau-Douglas High School today. We lift them in prayer and blessing as they begin the next chapter of their journeys.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope. — Jeremiah 29:11
We celebrate your accomplishments and pray that you carry the values of compassion, justice, and hope with you wherever you go. Your RLC family is proud of you!
Monday Bible Study
This week’s theme: “No Temple Needed — God’s Light Is Enough”
This week, we reflect on Revelation 21:10, 22–22:5, where John envisions the New Jerusalem, a city filled with light, healing, and the eternal presence of God. We’ll explore the vision of a world restored and reconciled, and what it means to live now as people of that promise. Join us every Monday at 6:15 pm via Zoom as we dive into one of the lectionary texts for the week. All are welcome—whether it’s your first time or your hundredth!
RLC’s Voice at the 2025 Synod Assembly Has Not Faded
President Karen Lawfer was granted two minutes as a “point of personal privilege” to correct serious inaccuracies in the bishop’s written report to the Synod Assembly regarding RLC. Her remarks were grounded in documented facts and reflected the broader concerns of the congregation. She was joined at the Assembly by RLC members Lucy Merrell, Karen Perkins, Nicholas Barrett, Leora Blackwell, who distributed position statements, engaged in dialogue, and represented the voice of Resurrection Lutheran Church with clarity and grace. All statements and materials distributed by RLC representatives are available online.

Kitchen & Dining Renovation Underway

Work has begun on the long-planned downstairs kitchen and cafeteria renovations—previously approved in 2023. Thanks to volunteers and salvaged grant planning, despite opposition and withheld funds.
Fire Inspection Follow-Up
This week, President Lawfer and Facilities/Grants Manager Brad Perkins met with Fire Marshal Theresa Ross to review corrections. All deficiencies, except a single stuck door (promptly fixed), were resolved.
Grant Funds Still Withheld / Frozen
$205,000 in grant and restricted funds remain improperly withheld, removed from RLC’s savings by Lisa Brendle and Kristin Cadigan-McAdoo, and other funds improperly frozen at True North Credit Union. These funds are essential to projects that must be completed by June 30, 2025. This week, President Lawfer and Lucy Merrell met with the assistant branch manager to request that the hold be lifted.

Faith in Action
Discovery Underway in Lawsuit
RLC’s legal team has initiated formal discovery to uncover documents and sworn answers related to constitutional violations and unauthorized financial activity. The truth is coming to light.
Standing Firm
The RLC Council reaffirmed protections for members’ personal property. Intimidation, sabotage, or unauthorized inventory efforts will be treated as harassment and reported as needed.

Report from the 2025 Synod Assembly in Anchorage (April 25-27)

RLC had a total of nine attendees: one on Synod Council, two who were recognized as voting members (Lisa Brendle and Julie Neyhart—elected at the disputed January meeting), and six guests. This is an extraordinary number of guests from Juneau, but many felt our presence was necessary to challenge ongoing misinformation about RLC. As always, Synod Assembly was an opportunity to meet new friends and reconnect with others.

Assembly Actions Included
• Election of synod council and churchwide representatives (all ran unopposed and were elected by voice vote).
• Adoption of the Synod Budget, which retains a 32% contribution to Churchwide and 10% First Fruits giving.
• Structural changes to reduce the bishop’s role to half-time, combining it with the half-time Director of Evangelical Mission position—saving the Synod budget over 30% in costs and producing a $28,000 surplus.
• Two resolutions: one thanking Joy Lutheran Church for hosting the Assembly and the other, more rare, conferring the honorary title of Bishop Emerita on the Rev. Shelley Wickstrom.

The guiding principles of the Alaska Synod—developed with input from congregations in November 2023—were also highlighted. Speakers from across the Synod shared how their congregations are embodying these principles.

Workshops and Highlights
Rev. Tim Brown, ELCA Director of Congregational Stewardship Support, was the keynote speaker and led a breakout session titled “Stewardship.” He emphasized the idea of Faithful Generosity and rethinking the language and approach to stewardship—urging congregations to frame their budget as a mission narrative. He highlighted RLC’s outreach and partnerships as examples of meaningful, impactful ministry.

Karen Perkins attended Bishop Tim Oslovich’s workshop Centering Prayer, Welcoming Prayer, and Connecting with God in Nature, which offered guided contemplative practices to support spiritual reflection and growth.

RLC’s Role at Assembly
President Karen Lawfer was granted two minutes as a “point of personal privilege” before the Bishop’s report to correct significant misinformation about Resurrection Lutheran Church in the Bishop’s written report. Her prepared statement, and all RLC Position Papers distributed at Assembly, are available online at Position Statements in the Conflict with the Alaska Synod Bishops.

Downstairs Renovations: Long-Awaited Work Underway

Fire Marshal Ross’s inspection identified facility issues already scheduled for correction under plans approved by the RLC Council in 2023. These issues had been previously identified in connection with RLC’s insurance review but were brought forward in this inspection — which we believe was invited by Kelly Magee, who became active well after the congregational approval.

The first phase of these renovations is now complete, thanks to an incredible volunteer effort. Quilters, scouts, the food pantry team, and others graciously made space to allow this work to begin. Stop by and see the progress!

Grant Funds Critical for Compliance and Completion
Renovation of the downstairs kitchen and dining areas, as well as electrical upgrades in the Juneau Live! Studio, are supported by grant funds from the Rasmuson Foundation, Alaska Food Network, and CBJ Youth Activity Board. These funds must be used before June 30, 2025. However, these funds remain inaccessible—removed from the church’s savings account by Lisa Brendle and Kristin Cadigan-McAdoo and some currently held at True North Credit Union under a misleading letter from their attorney. These funds (totaling over $205,000) include grant allocations, dedicated accounts, and operating reserves.

The council believes this was orchestrated by Mike McMullen, but certainly carried out without authority from the congregation, council, or even the ELCA—despite public claims to the contrary. It appears these funds have been sitting in a paper, non-interest-bearing draft note for nearly a year, and the congregation continues to be denied full financial reports. With new evidence confirming Brendle was ineligible to serve on Council (due to exceeding term limits in 2024), she may be personally liable for the return of these funds and any resulting damages.

Discovery and Accountability
Discovery is now underway in the lawsuit filed by Brendle and her attorney. In April, Defendants served their First Interrogatories and Requests for Production, compelling sworn answers and documentation regarding:
• Constitutional violations
• Financial misconduct
• Improper communications with synod leadership
• The legitimacy of actions taken by the plaintiffs
This marks a turning point in our effort to expose the truth and protect RLC’s mission and ministries.

Handling Bullying and Intimidation
Kelly Magee and others continue to assert authority they do not have—including demanding an inventory of personal property at RLC. The RLC Council has passed formal resolutions affirming the rights of all facility users and members regarding personal property. Any unauthorized attempt to interfere with or remove property will be met with appropriate legal action, including contacting Juneau Police Department. These ongoing intimidation tactics will not be tolerated.

A Disappointing Strategy of Authoritarianism and Exclusion
Antagonists have followed a strategy of misinformation, exclusion, and deception, encouraged by improper counsel and sometimes explicit, sometimes tacit synod support. This approach is failing:
• They cannot call legitimate meetings.
• Their misrepresentations are unraveling under scrutiny.
• Their knowledge of RLC’s operations and governance is limited.
• Their exclusionary tactics violate both Christian witness and non-profit corporate law.

These “dirty tricks” have included:
• Attempts to block food access from SEAKFB.
• Interference with the 2026 CBJ YAB grant application.
• Substitution of our Easter ad with one deleting additional worship and fellowship.
• Orchestrating the fire inspection to target and shut down vital programs.
• Demands that members remove their own equipment from RLC, regardless of ministry use or importance.

These tactics are failing. But very real damage to the congregation and individuals continues. Allies and supporters of this group are well advised to consider their complicity in these acts.

Living Resurrection Lutheran This Week
of May 3, 2025

Christ is Risen! Alleluia!
A big thank you to everyone who covered last Saturday at both the community lunch in RLC Cafeteria and Dining Room, and during the Service of the Word, for all who went to the Synod Assembly in Anchorage last weekend. As always, everyone had a great meal and worshipful service.

RLC at 2025 Synod Assembly in Anchorage Last Weekend
Last weekend (April 25–27), RLC had a number of members at the Alaska Synod Assembly in Anchorage: Aside from the two voting members there were six other participants. RLC was granted two minutes as a “Point of Personal Privilege” to address errors and omissions in the Bishop’s report on RLC. Written materials prepared and distributed at the Assembly can be found at Position Statements in the Conflict with the Alaska Synod Bishops. It was nice to meet with members of the Southeast Cluster as well as network with others throughout the state. A report will be given at the Service of the Word today, as well as posted on our website later.

Food Pantry and Community Lunches
We continue to serve our community faithfully each week through:
Tuesday Community Lunch & Food Pantry (noon-4:30 PM)
Saturday Community Lunch (noon)
In case you need to be convinced about the value of these programs, I want to refer you to Chapter 3 of the 2025 World Happiness Report, titled “Sharing Meals with Others: How Sharing Meals Supports Happiness and Social Connections.

Grant Funds Needed to Complete Planned Upgraded and Improvements
As was stated last week, an inspection by Capital City Fire and Rescue identified facility upgrades needed to maintain safety (an investigation instigated by congregation member Kelly McGee – apparently under the guise of the meeting with RLC’s insurance broker, Matt Adams, which I attended and did not suggest such an inspection). These upgrades are a part of the plans developed through grants received by RLC through the Rasmuson Foundation, Alaska Food Network, and the City of Juneau Youth Activity Board grant. We are actively working to secure the funds ($205,000) removed from RLC accounts by Lisa Brendle and Kristin Cadigan-McAdoo as a portion of these funds will allow us to complete these improvements before the grant deadlines of June 30, 2025 (and the 30-day CCFR re-inspection).

Personal Property at RLC
Those acting without constitutional authority, including congregation member McGee, continue to make claims and demands regarding a number of issues (over which they have no authority), including a purported inventory of personal property (which the council believe to be a pretense for removal of property by this group). The RLC Council has passed resolutions regarding personal property at RLC, and members, facility users (the scouts, musical groups, etc.) and others each have permission regarding storage and use of personal property at RLC. None of these organizations or individuals are obligated, or should, respond to this request for this unauthorized “inventory.”

Continued Intimidation, Bullying And Harassment Tactics
Any action by the group acting without constitutional authority, regarding the fire inspection (which the council believes to be a pretense to remove the broadcast booth and cafeteria / food pantry equipment and close both programs), the continued vandalism of the broadcast booth, and actions regarding personal property will be dealt with appropriately, including the calling of JPD and filing charges of theft or vandalism. Such intimidation, bullying and harassment tactics will not be tolerated at RLC.

Living Resurrection Lutheran This Week of April 25, 2025

Christ is Risen! Alleluia!
We thank everyone who helped make our Holy Week and Easter celebrations so meaningful. The Maundy Thursday service, the Good Friday prayer vigil and service, the Saturday community lunch and Easter Vigil Service of the Word, and the Easter Sunrise service followed by Easter breakfast, with the regular Easter service following. It was a blessing to celebrate the Resurrection with familiar faces and new friends alike, even amid these challenging times. Special thanks to all who volunteered, sang, served, and shared their gifts!

Congregation Council
At its April 24 meeting, your elected Council took important actions to protect the ministries and governance of RLC. In response to misleading information being shared at the upcoming Synod Assembly, the Council adopted resolutions affirming the legitimacy of our elected leadership, objecting to the mischaracterization of RLC by synod officials, and highlighting violations of our congregation’s constitution by those claiming unauthorized authority.

The Council also acknowledged a recent discovery that Lisa Brendle exceeded the six-year constitutional term limit for council service in March 2024, rendering her ineligible to serve as Council member or president since that time.

RLC at 2025 Synod Assembly in Anchorage this Weekend
This weekend (April 25-27), RLC will have number of members at the Alaska Synod Assembly in Anchorage: Council President Karen Lawfer, Music Director Lucy Merrell, and Members Leora Blackwell, Nicholas Barrett, and Karen Perkins. Voting members are Lisa Brendle and Julie Neyhart, as well as Synod Council Member Brad Perkins. Please hold them in prayer as they advocate for truth, constitutional governance, and the ongoing mission and ministries of RLC.

Food Pantry and Community Lunches

Saturday Community Lunch (noon)

These upgrades were a part of the plans developed through grants received by RLC through the Rasmuson Foundation, Alaska Food Network, and the City of Juneau Youth Activity Board grant. We are actively working to complete these improvements before critical grant deadlines on June 30, 2025.

Discovery Begins: Standing for Truth
We are excited to share that this week, our legal team formally served the first major round of discovery demands in the lawsuit filed against RLC’s legitimate leadership. Defendants’ First Interrogatories and First Requests for Production were sent to Plaintiffs’ attorney, compelling answers under oath to critical questions and requiring the production of key documents regarding constitutional violations, financial mismanagement, communications with synod leadership, and the legitimacy of actions taken over the past two years. This marks an important step forward in bringing the truth to light and protecting the mission and ministries of RLC.

We just completed another successful TV Production Camp during Spring Break. You can see the newest Juneau Eats! Produced by the campers on our Juneau Live! YouTube channel. This was our sixth camp funded by three years of the City and Borough of Juneau Youth Activity Board grants.

Tuesday 4/1 at 5:30 pm
The constitutionally established Worship and Music Committee continues to meet regularly to plan services. We will be finalizing plans for Holy Week and Easter. Because we are committed to letting worship be worship, we are focusing on opportunities outside of Sunday mornings, which has been taken over by a self-appointed group.

Wednesday 4/2 at 5:30 pm
Week 4 of our Lenten Devotion and Activity. Last week we had a great time baking cookies, decorating gift bags and giving them out as a way to communicate love. This week’s topic is prayer. A copy of the bulletin is attached to this email. You are encouraged to participate in the activity of creating a prayer cube via Zoom, if you can’t join us downstairs at RLC.
