THANKS FROM RECIPIENTS OF RLC’S MONETARY GIFTS
Another thank you message from a recipient of the Resurrection Lutheran Mission Endowment Fund—this one from The Women of the ELCA plus a note from our sister congregation, Island of Faith in Wrangell.
Thank you for supporting Katie’s Fund with your gift of $256.89. Your gift makes a real difference in women’s lives. Thank you.
Last year, ... twelve diverse young adult women joined the ELCA Young Adult Ministry Peace Not Walls Pilgrimages to the Holy Land. These ten-day journeys were not field trips or service trips; instead, they were journeys of accompaniment and transformation. These young women, whose travel and learning were supported by your gifts to Katie’s Fund, discovered new insights into peace, justice, and the roots of our shared faith. And now, they are sharing their wisdom with the larger church.
This is just one example of the global education, living theology and leadership development opportunities that your giving to Katie’s Fund supports.
Your dedication and faithful support make this possible, and much more. Thank you. To learn more about our work together, please visit www.womenofhte elca.org.
Distributions from the Mission Endowment Fund also went to Haven House and toward training of the Southeast Cluster’s SAM candidates. The gift to Island of Faith comes from the partnerships section of RLC’s budget.
Mission Endowment Fund Report
Haven House Juneau, a faith-based organization providing supported and structured living opportunities for women reentering the community from prison, responded to a $256.89 donation from the RLC Mission Endowment Fund with a thank you letter including these words. “Since Haven House opened ...,thirteen women have resided at the home to begin their recovery journey. Seeing the women enjoying a home environment and entering into recovery with structured supports continues to motivate the board members, staff, and volunteers. We very much appreciate your financial support for this ministry.”
2015 distributions also went to Katie’s Fund of the Women of the ELCA and toward training of the Southeast Cluster’s SAM candidates. For 2016 the recipient of the distribution (10%) is the Alaska Synod for First Call Debt Reduction.
MISSION ENDOWMENT FUND REPORT
I am pleased to provide this annual accounting and report on the ministries supported through RLC’s Mission Endowment Fund for 2015. Two financial reports on the Fund, the Balance Sheet by Account and the Statement of Income and Expense by Account, were published in the booklet of reports for the January 31st Congregation Meeting. Collectively, these reports providethe annual accounting of the Fund.
The financial reports provide a “bird’s eye” level view of the Fund. It is our hope that this narrative report will provide details to more fully explain the experience of the Fund in 2015.
In 2015 the Fund received contributions in memory of (John) Dan Squires, Charles Robert (Bob) Moore, Nancy McMullen, Kathy Peterson, Lorrie Garner, and Mike Miller. Total contributions in 2015 were $20,932.22.
Distributions for the Fund are made on two independent occasions. As contributions are received by the Fund, 10% is distributed immediately. The Mission Endowment Fund Committee decided that these 2015 distributions would go to Hospice and
Homecare of Juneau. $2,093.22 was distributed in 2015.
The other distribution is made at the end of each year. Until the Fund balance is $500,000, 2% of the yearend balance is distributed. When the Fund balance reaches $500,000, the annual distribution will increase to 5% of the yearend balance. In 2015, distributions from the 2014 yearend balance went to Hospice and Homecare of Juneau, to Lutheran World Relief for Syrian
Refugees, and to RLC for Table Talk. The 2015 distribution from the 2014 yearend balance was $413.43.
With the growth in the Fund in 2015, it reached the size to allow a change in its investment portfolio. The Committee proposed to the Congregation Council, and the Council approved, opening an account with the ELCA Endowment Fund Pool Trust-Fund A. Fund A has a long history of returning dividends substantially greater than the ELCA Mission Investment Fund where our funds were primarily invested most recently.
If you have any questions about the Mission Endowment Fund, please feel free to contact me or any other member of the committee. The other members, as of this report, are: Karen Lawfer, Wendy Larsen, Tyler Israelson, Pastor Sue Bahleda, Adam
Garner, and Mike McMullen.
